Difference between Flat Bed Sheet and Fitted Bed Sheet
To understand the difference between flat bed sheet and fitted bed sheet, we must know what is flat bed sheet and fitted bed sheet? Nowadays flat and fitted bed sheets are used for the same purpose – to protect the mattress and make smooth surface for lying.
A bed sheet is a rectangular piece of cloth or linen cotton used to cover a mattress. It is this sheet that one typically lies on. In many areas of the world, a second flat bed sheet is laid on top of the sheet covering the mattress. This is known as a “flat bed sheet” ,and when a top sheet is used, the sheet covering the mattress is known as a “fitted bed sheet”. One sleeps between the two bed sheets. Blankets, comforters, and other bed covers are then placed on top of the second bed sheet.
Many people buy mattress protector in spite of fitted sheets. others who love sewing buy fabric from fabric store Fabric.com at cheap rate and sew themselves.
Many of our customers ask for the difference between these two. Some wants to buy from us at Linens’n’Curtains, Whichever the case, we will guide you here with the difference between these.
So, here we are explaining in details about both the sheets either flat or fitted.
The flat sheet, also called the top sheet, originally is placed between the sleeper and the blanket. Its function is to make your bedding more welcoming. It also protects the blanket or the comforter from getting dirty. On warmer nights the flat sheet can be used by itself to cover the sleeper instead of a blanket. The exact size of a flat sheet when purchasing is less important as it is used separately.
One can use a queen size flat sheet on a double bed or vice versa.
Fitted sheets are the sheets that cover the mattress on a bed. Fitted sheets often have elastic sewn into each one of the four corners to help it stay in place over the mattress. Fitted sheets, like the other components of bedding, are sold individually, called open stock, or as part of a complete set. A complete sheet set includes the fitted sheet; the flat or top sheet; and either one pillow case for twin-sized beds, or two for all other sizes. The purpose of a flat sheet is to keep the comforter/blanket clean (and to have a soft layer next to your skin).
Flat sheets look like their name; they are flat, and fold easily and neatly. Fitted sheets, because of their elastic corners, are harder to fold and cannot lie smooth and flat unless pulled over a mattress.
Fitted sheets protect the mattress and provide a comfortable surface for the sleeper to lie on. Also called bottom sheets, they fit snugly around the corners of the mattress. A flat sheet lies over the fitted sheet, tucked in on the sides and bottom, under the comforter. Flat sheets help create a welcoming bedspread. They also protect the comforter from getting dirty, so it doesn’t have to be washed as often, or they can be used by themselves on warmer nights instead of blankets.
When buying fitted sheets, it is very important to pay attention to the dimensions of your mattress. While it is possible to use flat sheets of the wrong size (using a queen size flat sheet on a double bed, for example), this should not be done with fitted sheets. Fitted sheets must pull snugly over the mattress and tuck in under each edge, so that they cannot be easily pulled off.
